This vibrant Howell Mountain Chardonnay exemplifies the terroir of Howell Mountain's Keyes vineyard. It expresses lemon-lime and mandarin notes, plus green apple, ripe pear and white peach. The barrel fermentation and sur lie aging has added viscosity and depth to this wine. Nicely integrated and balanced oak adds a hint of vanilla, nutmeg and toast. An intriguing minerality and complementary acidity adds to the overall complexity of this wine, which carries through to a beautifully lengthy finish.

Details

On the Vaca mountain range northeast of the Napa Valley, the Howell Mountain appellation boundary was drawn at 1,400 feet “above the fog.” This elevation and its volcanic soils produce some of Napa’s most long-lived Cabernets and complex Chardonnays.

Vineyard Notes

Keyes Vineyard – Howell Mountain (100%): Located near the town of Angwin, at roughly 1,850 ft. elevation, this Howell Mountain Vineyard sits adjacent to the Las Posadas State Forest. The mountainous soil is predominantly volcanic, shallow with low fertility producing Chardonnay that expresses citrus and stone fruit flavors with a crispness and distinct minerality.

Production Notes

With abundant winter rains, the groundwater and our reservoirs were able to refresh after several years of drought. The summer had a few heat spells where we did employ water and canopy management, to avoid any damage to the fruit. The harvest was warm, early than normal and the yields were a little bit below average.
